About Sun City & Pilanesberg
Three hours from Johannesburg by road, a volcanic crater in the North West Province contains one of southern Africa's stranger juxtapositions: on one side of the valley, the largest entertainment resort on the continent; on the other, 55,000 hectares of malaria-free Big Five wilderness accessible by balloon at sunrise. Sun City is Africa's most elaborate purpose-built resort, a self-contained entertainment ecosystem of water parks, golf courses, casinos, theatres, and hotels ranging from the extraordinary Palace of the Lost City to the budget-accessible Cabanas. It does what it does with committed, operationally excellent conviction. It is not wilderness, it does not pretend to be, and what it offers is what a large proportion of South African and regional family travellers want: activities, entertainment, food, and accommodation in a single, secure location.
Pilanesberg National Park, directly adjacent, is something else: a functioning malaria-free Big Five reserve set inside the concentric rings of an ancient volcanic crater (approximately 1,300 million years old), with a large hippo and crocodile lake at its centre. The two coexist because the volcanic geology that created the crater also separated the resort development from the wildlife area effectively. You can be at a blackjack table in Sun City and watching lions hunt in Pilanesberg on the same day. The crater's bowl-shaped topography concentrates wildlife around the central Mankwe Lake and the concentric ring valleys radiating outward, the landscape is visually distinct from both Kruger and Madikwe, greener and more varied with rocky outcrops rising from the valley floors.
Pilanesberg is one of the best locations in South Africa for hot air balloon safaris, the volcanic crater's topography produces ideal flying conditions, and an early-morning flight above the concentric ridges as the light builds, watching wildlife from above the treetops, creates an experience that standard game drives cannot replicate. Standard morning, afternoon, and night game drives cover the park's extensive road network. All Big Five are present; the park is particularly known for elephants and reliable rhino sightings. Self-drive is permitted for visitors with their own vehicles, making Pilanesberg one of the more accessible Big Five reserves in the country. For Johannesburg-based visitors who cannot commit to the 5-hour Kruger drive, Pilanesberg provides a 3-hour alternative with comparable Big Five credentials and zero malaria risk, particularly compelling for families with young children.
Things to Do in Sun City & Pilanesberg
Hot air balloon over the volcanic crater
Pilanesberg's signature experience. Early-morning flights above the concentric ridges of the 1,300-million-year-old volcanic complex, watching wildlife from above the treetops as the light builds. Ivory Tree Lodge organises balloon departures for guests; the geological perspective combined with the wildlife visible below creates an experience standard game drives cannot replicate.
Game drive the ring valleys
The crater's bowl topography concentrates wildlife around Mankwe Lake and the concentric ring valleys. All Big Five are present, with elephants and rhino sightings particularly reliable. The road network is extensive enough for self-drivers and well-suited to lodge-organised drives. Night drives in private concession areas add the nocturnal dimension.
Spend a day at the Valley of Waves
Sun City's water theme park, artificial beach, wave pool, and extensive ride infrastructure. South Africa's most popular water attraction and the primary draw for families. Suitable for all ages from toddlers (designated kids' pools) to older teens (the larger drop slides and tubes).
Stay at the Palace of the Lost City
Sun City's architectural centrepiece, a 5-star fantasy structure built to evoke an ancient African palace. The rooftop cocktail deck has views across the resort and surrounding bush; the elaborate interior is worth seeing regardless of whether you stay. Theatrical, opulent, and entirely committed to its premise.
Play the Lost City Golf Course
Two championship Gary Player-designed courses, the Signature Course and the Lost City Golf Course. The Lost City's crocodile-filled water hazard on the 13th hole is locally famous; the Signature Course has hosted the Nedbank Golf Challenge for decades. A legitimate destination for serious golf travellers.
Combine resort with safari in 48 hours
The most effective itinerary: check into Sun City, spend a day at the Valley of Waves, do one afternoon game drive in Pilanesberg, take a dawn balloon safari the following morning, and depart. Four distinct activities in 48 hours, all within the same geographic footprint. The juxtaposition is part of the appeal.
When to Visit Sun City & Pilanesberg
Cool Dry
May, September
The classic safari window. Vegetation thins, water sources concentrate wildlife around Mankwe Lake and the ring valleys, and the cooler temperatures make daytime activity comfortable. Best balloon-flying conditions with stable morning air. Sun City operates year-round but is least crowded in this window outside South African school holidays.
Summer School Holidays
December, January
South African summer holidays peak at Sun City, the Valley of Waves and resort facilities are at full capacity. Wildlife disperses in the green season but balloon flights and game drives continue. Book months ahead for any December stay; expect premium pricing and large family crowds.
Shoulder
October, November / February, April
Settled weather, fewer school-holiday crowds, and good wildlife viewing through the shoulder seasons. The combination of warm-but-not-extreme temperatures, lush green from the recent rains (early autumn), and significantly lower lodge rates makes these underrated windows.
Getting to Sun City & Pilanesberg
From Johannesburg's OR Tambo Airport is approximately 180km, 2.5 to 3 hours by road via the N4 west, then the R556 to the resort. Self-drive is straightforward on tarred roads. Several operators run scheduled coach transfers from Johannesburg for guests not driving. Light charter flights to Pilanesberg International Airport (within Sun City) are available for premium guests, a 30-minute flight versus the 3-hour drive.
Where to Stay
On the Sun City side, the Palace of the Lost City is the 5-star flagship, theatrical, opulent, and entirely committed to its fantasy architecture. The Cascades Hotel is lighter and more nature-integrated, preferred by guests wanting Valley of Waves proximity without the full Palace experience. The Cabanas is the most affordable Sun City option, offering good family value with full resort access. In Pilanesberg, Ivory Tree Game Lodge is the premier reserve property and the balloon-safari operator. Bakubung Bush Lodge is large and family-friendly with strong children's programming. Two to four nights covers a combined Sun City and Pilanesberg stay comfortably.
Travel Tips for Sun City & Pilanesberg
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is Sun City worth visiting if I don't gamble or play golf?
- For families, yes, the Valley of Waves, multiple pools, and resort food make it a self-contained family holiday destination. For travel-focused adults without family, the gambling, golf, and shopping elements dominate the offering and the Palace itself is the main non-gaming draw. Half a day at the Palace cocktail deck combined with Pilanesberg can deliver the Sun City experience without committing to a full resort stay.
- How does Pilanesberg compare to Madikwe?
- Different scales and registers. Madikwe is more exclusive (3-vehicle limit, no day visitors, premium lodges only), more remote (5 hours from Johannesburg vs Pilanesberg's 3), and weights toward wild dogs and Kalahari sand. Pilanesberg is more accessible (self-drive permitted, day visits possible), centred on a volcanic crater landscape, and more family-friendly. Both are malaria-free Big Five reserves in the North West.
- Are the balloon flights weather-dependent?
- Yes, balloon operations require calm morning air and good visibility. Most flights operate but cancellations for weather are not uncommon. Operators rebook cancelled flights when capacity allows; build flexibility into a Pilanesberg itinerary if the balloon is a primary goal.
- Can I do a day trip from Johannesburg?
- Pilanesberg yes (3 hours each way leaves a full day for one game drive); Sun City less effectively, the resort rewards an overnight to access the Valley of Waves and Palace properly. The most rewarding format is 2 nights at Sun City covering both, or 1 night at each for the combined experience.
