Best Time to Visit Africa

“When should I go?” depends on what you want to see. Here’s how the continent’s seasons line up with the wildlife, weather and crowds.

Africa runs on two seasons

Most of Sub-Saharan Africa swings between a long dry season and a shorter wet season. The dry season concentrates wildlife around permanent water and is the safari high season. The wet season — often called the “green season” — brings lush landscapes, birdlife and dramatic skies. Both are good. They are just different trips.

May to October

Dry Season

Cool, sunny days and cold nights. Vegetation thins out and animals concentrate around permanent water, making this peak safari season.

Best for

  • Big-five game viewing in Kruger, Hwange and Chobe
  • Walking safaris in South Luangwa and Mana Pools
  • Victoria Falls activities, the rapids open up for rafting from August
  • Whale watching in Hermanus from June to November

Watch for

  • Cold mornings on open game drives, layer up
  • Vic Falls flow drops significantly on the Zambian side from October

November to April

Green Season

Summer rains bring lush landscapes, dramatic skies and migratory birds. Lower rates and quieter camps, though some bush roads close.

Best for

  • Birding across the region, hundreds of migratory species arrive
  • Photography, dramatic clouds, low golden light, vivid green grass
  • Calving season in the Kalahari and Liuwa Plain (January to March)
  • Victoria Falls at peak flow (March to May)

Watch for

  • Some remote camps close from January to March
  • Thicker bush reduces big-cat sightings in dense reserves

April to May and November

Shoulder Season

The sweet spot. Vegetation is still green, animals are easier to spot than mid-rains, and prices are below high season.

Best for

  • Cape Town and the Garden Route in autumn light
  • Okavango Delta as floodwaters arrive
  • Lower lodge rates and fewer vehicles in parks

Watch for

  • Weather can be unpredictable, pack for both warm days and cool evenings

Big-five safari (Southern Africa)

Dry season pulls wildlife to permanent water sources and thins out the bush.

Great Migration river crossings

Mara River crossings between Kenya and Tanzania peak during these months.

Gorilla trekking (Rwanda, Uganda)

Dry seasons mean firmer trails and easier visibility through the bamboo.

Victoria Falls (peak flow)

Zambezi at its highest after the rains — thunderous spray, no rafting.

Victoria Falls (activities)

Lower water exposes the gorge for white-water rafting, Devil's Pool and gorge swings.

Cape Town and the Cape Winelands

Long, warm summer days. December is the hottest and busiest.

Mozambique island getaways

Outside cyclone season, with calm seas and excellent diving on the Bazaruto and Quirimbas archipelagos.

Climbing Kilimanjaro

Drier trails and clearer summit days. Avoid April–May and November rains.

Sahara desert (Morocco, Egypt)

Cooler daytime temperatures. Summer highs above 45°C make travel hard.

Climate at a glance

Southern Africa

Summer rains from November to March. Cool, dry winters from May to September. Best safari window: June to October.

East Africa

Two rainy seasons — long rains in April–May, short rains in November. Migration in the Serengeti–Mara peaks June to October.

North Africa

Hot, dry summers and mild winters. Avoid the Sahara in summer. Coastal travel is good March to May and September to November.

West & Central Africa

Humid year-round. Dry season runs November to March in most of West Africa. Equatorial central Africa sees rain almost every month.
