The continent's adrenaline circuit

Adventure Activities

From the Vic Falls Bridge bungee to skydiving over the Skeleton Coast, Africa hosts some of the world's most photographed adrenaline moments. Most are run by long-established operators with strong safety records.

The adrenaline capital

Why Victoria Falls?

Few places concentrate adventure activities like Vic Falls. The Zambezi gorge below the bridge supports bungee jumping, gorge swings, white-water rafting and microlight flights — all accessible from the same town. Operators on the Zambian (Livingstone) and Zimbabwean (Vic Falls town) sides offer broadly the same activities; cross the bridge for whichever gives the better deal.

Best months for water activities run August to December when the rapids are at their wildest. Devil’s Pool — swimming to the lip of the falls — is only open September to January.

All in one trip

  • Bungee jump (111 m)
  • White-water rafting
  • Gorge swing
  • Microlight flight
  • Devil’s Pool
  • Sundowner sunset cruise

The activities

Intensity is a rough proxy for the adrenaline curve — not the risk. All listed activities run with safety-certified operators.

Bungee jump

Extreme

Victoria Falls Bridge (Zambia/Zimbabwe)

20 minutes

111 metres straight down off the historic bridge with the Zambezi roaring below. One of the world's iconic jumps.

White-water rafting

Extreme

Zambezi River, below Victoria Falls

Half to full day

Class IV–V rapids in the basalt gorge. Run August to December when water levels are right.

Devil's Pool

Moderate

Livingstone Island, Zambia

Half day

Swim to the natural rock barrier at the lip of Vic Falls and look 100 m down. September to January only.

Gorge swing

Extreme

Batoka Gorge, Vic Falls

1 hour

Step off the cliff, fall 70 metres, swing across the gorge. Easier psychologically than a bungee — barely.

Sandboarding

Moderate

Swakopmund, Namibia

Half day

Down the Skeleton Coast dunes on a stand-up board or lie-down sled. Speeds touching 80 km/h on the bigger faces.

Skydiving

Extreme

Swakopmund (Namibia), Cape Town, Pretoria

Half day

Tandem freefall over the desert meeting the ocean (Namibia) or over the Cape Peninsula. Best views on the continent.

Shark cage diving

Moderate

Gansbaai, South Africa

Half day

Eye-level with great whites and bronze whalers. Operators around Cape Town run trips year-round.

Quad biking the desert

Easy

Sossusvlei, Namibia

1 to 3 hours

Guided runs across the Namib dunes at sunset. A gentler way to feel the scale of the desert.

Hot-air ballooning

Easy

Serengeti, Masai Mara, Sossusvlei

Half day with breakfast

Dawn lift-off over the migration plains or red dunes. The Serengeti's flagship sunrise experience.

Microlight over Vic Falls

Easy

Livingstone, Zambia

15 to 30 minutes

Open-cockpit flight over the Falls and into the gorge. No bags allowed, just you and the camera you've strapped down.

Before you book

Three things to confirm

Operator certification

Look for SATSA (South Africa), KAZA membership (Vic Falls) or the local civil aviation authority for any flying activity.

Insurance coverage

Many travel policies exclude bungee, paragliding, skydiving and shark diving. Buy an add-on if needed.

Medical conditions

Heart, back and neck conditions exclude you from bungee and gorge swings. Pregnant guests are excluded from most adrenaline activities.
